Capitol Comedy presents You Can’t Be Serious
Take a break from the grim grind of daily news about war casualties, campus protests, debate blunders, an assassination attempt, and last minute efforts to change nominees. Come see Capitol Comedy’s new show, “You Can’t Be Serious.” The seven talented performers of the Capitol Comedy troupe send up the Biden-Harris Administration, the Trump-Vance challenge, and a host of public figures with song parodies, comedy sketches, mock commercials and fake news updates. No topic is off limits as the troupe finds humor in:
• Donald Trump’s nicknames for his political opponents in the song, My Favorite Stings.
• Joe Biden’s less-than-accurate reminiscences about his Pennsylvania boyhood in the song, Scranton, Pennsylvania.
• Kamala Harris’ laments about the impossible tasks Biden assigned her and her not-quite promotion to the top of the ticket, in the song Kamala’s Lament.
• J.D. Vance’s explanation for his career meanders in the song, Actin’ Like A Hillbilly.
See what happens when an enterprising psychoanalyst offers his services to conflicted voters right outside a polling place. Watch as would-be migrants anxiously await the election results on both sides of the Mexican and Canadian borders. “You Can’t Be Serious” borrows familiar melodies from Broadway, movies, and pop culture, and adds clever lyrics to poke fun at American politicians and world leaders. As part of their 2024-2025 national tour, Capitol Comedy will be here for one night only. Don’t miss it!
Here’s what the critics had to say about Capitol Comedy:
....there are no political persons who are safe from being brought to life in a comedic way that involves dancing, singing, and just all-out very funny acts.... (Carol Kaufman Segal, Carol’s Culture Corner)
The bitingly accurate portrayals and song lyrics bring belly laughs to audience members on both sides of the political aisle. (Laura Foti Cohen, larchmontbuzz.com)
Nobody and nothing is sacred as Capitol Comedy starts the satire steamboat is on its merry way...This is a cast that knows its way around comic satire, clowning, and slapstick – and they can sing and dance too.(Elaine Mura, Splash magazines)
...the sharpest current events lyrics since Tom Lehrer... the jokes are likely to stick in the throats of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike. (Hollywood Progressive)
...a brilliant job allowing us to laugh at ourselves as well as political figures, without being mean-spirited or gratuitous. (audience review)
“You Can’t Be Serious” is produced by City In A Swamp Productions, written by Nicholas and Karen Zill and Aaron Matisjasic, directed by Caitlin Hart, with music direction and piano accompaniment by Brenda Varda.
